"I Like To Watch" Finally Here

After the release of Chris Korda's "I Like To Watch" took on almost crime-novel-like twists, with his appearance alongside the video in Holland during his last live performance making real headlines, the record is now finally hitting stores in full-blown four-cover format with the amazing remixes. Along with it, of course, comes a statement from Null Records that we don't want to withhold from you:

NULL RECORDS Release Statement:

The music piece in question does not directly refer to the events and circumstances of the September 11th attacks, but rather to their media representation. The piece was written in the days immediately following the attacks by a North American artist, in response to the relentless, unchecked, and often disrespectful repetition and reinterpretation of the images in public media.

The way in which space was made for original footage during those days went far beyond what was necessary under the duty to inform. The obscenity of the unrestrained repetition and exploitation of these images in the context of various interest groups is the real subject of the piece. The comparison to the negotiation of sexual themes and needs through pornographic methods is evident and was drawn by various contemporary philosophers in the immediate aftermath of the events (for example, Slavoj Žižek in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). In our view, it falls within the realm of artistic freedom not to directly denounce the obscenity of the media's handling of the victims and the horror of September 11th, but rather to depict it from the perspective of the recipient. The piece tells the story of the (imaginary) potential recipient of an intrusive and relentlessly repeated and exploited motif. His reaction sharpens what the nature and frequency of the reporting potentially suggest: "I like to watch." The release targets a critical audience and presupposes a mature evaluation.

Although the piece was written under the immediate impact of the events (and must be understood as such), its release on the anniversary is no less mediated. This aims to highlight the speed at which this very complex and far-reaching event was reduced from its historical significance to its chronological coordinates. Just one week after the attacks, the global media were already only referring to "September 11th," reducing a detailed account of the events to a complete simplification down to the mere date.
